On behalf of all of New Pilot I’d like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday and a happy new year.

This year we released Double Time Warp Sessions in May. Produced and recorded by New Pilot and Bill Ryan at RMI studios in April of 2011. If you haven’t yet received your FREE copy you can a free download of the EP is available under the “Listen” tab.

We also (just about) finished up Looser, our next album due out January of 2012…. That’s NEXT MONTH! Holy cow.

Introduction

A few years ago, I stopped at a coffee shop and purchased a collection of John Lennon’s songs on a CD. I had never really listened to a lot of Lennon’s solo stuff outside of his many singles. Johnny, Sean, and I were always big fans of George Harrison’s early solo career ever since we heard All Things Must Pass for the first time. In fact, all three of us would probably agree that album is the greatest solo Beatles album and for me personally, one of my favorite albums period… From any artist.

The Drive Home

Anyways, I was on my way home from the coffee shop listening to this new collection of John Lennon songs I had just purchased and every song was blowing my mind. Tracks like Mother, Jealous Guy, Mind Games, Isolation, I’m Losing You, God, Working Class Hero, Woman is the Nigger of the World, and so many others were like nothing I had ever heard before.

In fact, it got so intense and I was so overwhelmed by emotion from listening to these songs that I actually had to pull my car over in Charlton on the side of Route 20 by Ted’s Package Store, and sit, and listen. I couldn’t drive. I was paralyzed. I just sat there and listened to the entire collection of songs and for the first time ever, I experienced Love, Hate, Anger, Jealousy, Sorrow, Anger again, and then so many other feelings all within 20 minutes. Too often while I was sitting there, these emotions would layer themselves and create a natural body high like I had never felt before.

Honestly, I got teary eyed as John sang about all of these deep emotions that HE was feeling 30-40 years ago. It was the craziest thing I’ve ever expererience and I’ve never felt anything like it since then.

The Legacy

As I pulled my car back onto the road and continued my trip home, I remember feeling really bad for the guy. He was so angry… yet, he spent most of his career singing about Love and demanding Peace. To this day, I still have mixed feelings about who John Lennon was. The raw emotions of these songs created an image for me of a man who was angry, bitter, spiteful, ungrateful, cynical, and yet full of love and hope.

This unique experience of overwhelming emotion changed my life forever, and for that I will always be grateful and thankful to the late John Lennon and the legacy he left behind.

New Pilot will be rocking two shows this weekend.

Paper City Brewery – FRIDAY, Dec. 9 – We LOVE this place. Here’s the quick run down: This show is from 6-8pm and we will play a two hour set during the brewery’s weekly “beer tasting” (read as “open bar for some great micro brew”). Pay $7 on your way in, drink and dance, and on your way out you trade your tasting cup in for a 4 pack of their brew. There’s no better deal and no better way to start your night. 21+ $7 6-8pm.

Mill Street Brews – SATURDAY, Dec. 10 – The Mill is our old stomping ground. Prior to 2011 we spent three years rehearsing above the venue. A Toys for Tots benefit brings us back and we’re eager to get caught in up in the cause and nostalgia. $10 to get into the show ($5 if you bring an unwrapped toy for the toys for tots charity). Other bands on the bill include: People with Instruments, Rounding Off Numbers, Hannah Fields, and more! All Ages $5-$10 6pm-1am. New Pilot takes the stage around 10pm.

Here’s the second installment of Saturday at the Hangar…. This is an original tune I’ve been working out for a couple weeks now. If nothing else, it serves as a nice little  song writing exercise…. gotta keep this brain creating, you guys.
